Anara: An AI Research Assistant That Shows Its Work

Anara is an AI workspace for science. It helps students and researchers find papers, read them faster and turn them into cited writing. Its main promise is trust: every claim it makes points back to the exact passage it came from. It is built for people writing a thesis, a literature review or a grant, where a wrong citation is a real problem.

What does Anara do?

Anara works on two kinds of material. You can upload your own papers and documents, and it can search the published literature for you.

Once your sources are in, you ask questions in plain language. Anara reads the full text where it can and answers with the source passage linked, so you can check each point. It can compare findings across papers and pull out methods and results. It can also check a draft against its sources to flag claims they do not support. It also formats citations in your journal's style.

It connects to the tools researchers already use. Every plan links to Zotero and Mendeley. Higher plans add PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov, then Google Drive, Notion and OneDrive. You can share folders with collaborators, and higher plans add OCR for scanned PDFs.

Which features stand out?

  • Claim-level citations — each answer links to the passage it came from
  • Draft checking — flags statements your sources do not back up
  • Journal-style citations — references formatted for the journal you target
  • Reference manager links — Zotero and Mendeley on every plan
  • Literature connectors — PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov from the Plus plan
  • Large uploads — up to 10,000 pages per file on Pro, unlimited on Max

How much does Anara cost?

Plans are priced per seat. Prices below are monthly, with the yearly rate in brackets:

  • Free — $0, limited daily AI use and uploads up to 20MB or 120 pages per file
  • Plus — $10 a month ($8 yearly), weekly usage and uploads up to 600 pages
  • Pro — $20 a month ($16 yearly), four times Plus usage, all models and OCR
  • Max 5x — $100 a month ($80 yearly), with Deep Search and unlimited uploads
  • Max 20x — $200 a month ($160 yearly), twenty times Pro usage
  • Enterprise — custom, with SSO and SharePoint sync

Who is Anara for?

Anara suits graduate students and academics doing literature reviews, where checking every source by hand takes days. Medical and life science researchers get the most from the PubMed and clinical trials links. Lab groups can share folders so everyone works from the same set of papers.

Where does Anara fall short?

The free plan is thin. Daily usage limits and a 120-page upload cap mean you can test it, but not run a real review on it.

There is no student discount, which stands out in a category where most research tools offer one. A student who needs the bigger upload limits pays full price.

Usage is described in relative terms, such as "4x Plus usage", rather than as a number of questions. That makes it hard to know which plan you actually need until you hit a limit. Like any AI reader, Anara can still miss a caveat or link a claim to the wrong passage. The source links only help if you open them.

Is Anara worth trying?

Yes, if you write anything that needs citations you can defend. The free plan shows how the source linking works on a few of your own papers. Move to Plus or Pro only when the upload limits get in the way.
