Runway ML Review: Gen-4.5 Video, Credits and Prices Explained

Runway is an AI video and image suite from Runway AI, Inc. It started as Runway ML, and runwayml.com now redirects to runway.com. The Creative platform lets you generate, edit and extend video from text, images, video or audio in one browser workspace. It sells on credits, and the credit maths is the thing to understand before you pay.

What does Runway do?

Runway Creative is the product most people mean. You write a prompt or upload a still, and Gen-4.5, Runway's own video model, turns it into a clip. Aleph 2.0 and Edit Studio let you change one frame and apply the edit across a whole shot. Act-Two maps your face and voice onto a character. Runway Agent builds a full video from a conversation. The Multi-Shot app turns one prompt into a sequence of shots. Workflows chains models together in a node graph.

The suite is no longer only Runway's models. Inside the same workspace you can run Seedance 2.0 and 2.5, Kling 3.0 and Nano Banana Pro. Seedream 5.0, FLUX.2, Gemini Omni and Claude Opus 4.8 are there too. Audio comes from ElevenLabs' Eleven v3, Lyria 3 and Seed Audio. Runway calls this the "world's best models" pitch, and it means one subscription covers most of the field.

Apps wrap common jobs into one-click tools. Remove from Video, Reshoot Product, Upscale Video and Add Dialogue cover most marketing jobs. Change Backdrop, Change Time of Day and Relight Scene handle the rest. Characters creates real-time video agents that hold a conversation. There are iOS and Android apps and an MCP server that connects Runway to Claude or ChatGPT.

Two other platforms sit beside Creative. Runway Dev is the API and a Media Router for developers. Runway Robotics uses the GWM-1 world model for simulation. Neither matters for a creator, but they explain the "Real-World Intelligence" language on the homepage.

Which features stand out?

• Aleph 2.0 and Edit Studio — edit one frame, and the change is applied to the rest of the clip.
• Runway Agent — describe the video you want in chat and get an edited result, not just a clip.

• Apps — relight, reshoot, remove objects or add dialogue with one prompt each.
• Workflows and MCP — node-based pipelines, and an agent connector for Claude and ChatGPT.

How much does Runway cost?

Every plan is a monthly credit allowance. Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits per five seconds. Prices below are monthly, with the annual rate in brackets.

Standard removes watermarks and adds 4K upscaling and three projects. Pro adds 15 parallel generations, a brand kit, a voice clone and MCP access. Max gets early model access, HDR and ProRes export, and rolls unused credits over for one month. On Standard and Pro, credits reset each month and do not roll over. Top-ups start at 1,000 credits and never expire. Team, Enterprise and API pricing are separate.

Who is Runway for?

Filmmakers and agencies with a real production budget get the most out of it. Amazon's "House of David", a History Channel series and an Under Armour commercial were made with it.

Marketing teams use the Apps to reshoot products, swap backdrops and relight scenes without a new shoot.

Hobbyists should start on the free credits and expect to upgrade fast. Ten seconds of Gen-4.5 is one experiment.

Where does Runway fall short?

Credits run out quickly. Standard buys 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month, which is a handful of takes. Most people end up on Pro or Max, and iteration is where the cost hides.

The free plan is a one-time grant, not a monthly allowance. Once the 125 credits are gone, the free account only lets you browse.

You pay Runway's margin on other people's models. Kling and Seedance inside Runway cost more per clip than the same models bought direct.

The rebrand confuses people. Searches for "runway ml" have fallen and the old domain redirects, but tutorials and reviews still use the old name.

Unused credits vanish on the two cheaper plans. Only Max rolls credits over, and only for a month.

Is Runway worth trying?

Yes, if video is your job. It is the most complete single workspace. Having Gen-4.5 next to Kling and Seedance saves a lot of tab switching. For occasional clips the credit model is expensive, and a per-clip tool costs less. Use the free credits to test one real shot in Gen-4.5. If the result is close to usable, Pro is the plan to buy.
