vidIQ Review: YouTube Research, AI Scripts and a Channel Coach in One Account

vidIQ is a growth toolkit for YouTube creators, and now for Instagram Reels too. It finds keywords and video ideas, scores titles and thumbnails, writes scripts and clips long videos into Shorts. It started as a Chrome extension. The company says that extension has 4 million users and a 4.8 rating on the Chrome Web Store. The free plan is real, and the two paid plans run on AI credits.

What does vidIQ do?

The research side is the core. Keyword research shows search volume and competition scores for YouTube terms. Daily Ideas suggests topics tuned to your channel and niche. Outliers surfaces videos in your niche that beat their channel's usual numbers. Competitor tracking and real-time stats show what rival channels publish and how fast it moves.

The creation side has grown around it. The script writer drafts a video script in your style. The thumbnail maker generates thumbnails from templates and supports A/B tests. A clipping tool cuts long videos into Shorts and TikToks. Titles, descriptions and tags get optimisation suggestions before you publish.

The AI Coach reads your channel and returns a growth plan. vidIQ also sells human coaching, a 1:1 coach on top of the Boost plan. A Model Context Protocol connector lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor query your vidIQ data in a chat. It works on every plan, including Free.

Which features stand out?

  • Outliers and Daily Ideas — topics that already beat the average in your niche, refreshed daily.
  • Keyword research for YouTube — search volume and competition scores, not web search data.
  • AI script writer — drafts a script from an idea, in the style of your channel.
  • Thumbnail maker with A/B testing — generate options, then test which one earns the click.
  • AI Coach — a channel audit and growth plan, with deeper Max Mode on the top plan.
  • MCP connector — use vidIQ's data inside Claude or ChatGPT on any plan.

How much does vidIQ cost?

Three plans for one channel, at US list prices. Local pricing may differ, and checkout shows the final price.

  • Free: $0. 150 AI credits a month, niche trends, content ideas, AI Coach tips and the MCP connector.
  • Boost: $19 a month, or $199 a year. 2,000 AI credits a month, or larger bundles at a higher price. Unlimited trend research and subscriber insights, the thumbnail tools, optimisation and masterclasses.
  • Max: $49 a month, or $468 a year. 6,000 AI credits a month and up to three times the AI Coach conversations. It adds Max Mode and up to 11 hours of clipping and generation.

The coaching plan and the Enterprise plan for agencies and networks are priced on request. Enterprise is the route for more than three channels or a team.

Who is vidIQ for?

New and growing creators who want one tool for research, titles, thumbnails and scripts. The free plan is enough to learn the keyword and idea tools.

Faceless and niche channels that live on topic selection. Outliers and Daily Ideas do the research those channels otherwise do by hand.

Creators who already work in Claude or ChatGPT. The MCP connector brings vidIQ's numbers into the chat instead of another tab.

Where does vidIQ fall short?

Reviews are mixed. Trustpilot shows 3.7 out of 5 from 1,376 reviews, and vidIQ has not replied to the negative ones. Support gets praise. The product gets less.

Billing is the most common complaint. Several reviewers say an annual plan renewed when they thought they had cancelled, or that cancelling was hard to confirm. Check the renewal date the day you subscribe.

The AI output is uneven. Recent one-star reviews describe generated videos as "AI slop". Others mention thumbnails that vidIQ's own scorer rates poorly, and credits lost on a generation that failed halfway. Credits make that hurt, because a retry costs again.

Some advice is dated. The tools still push long tag lists, while YouTube says tags play a small role in discovery. Treat the score as a checklist, not a ranking promise.

Is vidIQ worth trying?

Yes, starting on the free plan. The keyword research, Outliers and idea tools are the reason to use it. The free tier shows whether they fit your niche. Upgrade to Boost when you are publishing weekly and want the thumbnail and optimisation tools. Use the script writer for a first draft and rewrite it in your own voice. For a dedicated script tool, compare Subscribr AI. For an outlier finder with stronger thumbnail generation, see 1of10.
